New Mixes + Experimentation

March 11th, 2008 by rj

So all the February mixes are out for download. Also I am mastering my mixes now for sound quality. This mean the volumes will all be the same throughout the mix and there should be no clipping. That said, they may sound a bit softer, so you may need to jack up your volume.

Also as you know, I’ve been experimenting with all the genres I like, and realized I am getting bored with a lot of the progressive house that’s coming out. So I’ve recently been getting into trance again. Then we have tech and deep house which I forever love. So I am excited to start doing multiple genre mixes and be respected for my genre changes. It seems most DJ’s get pigeonholed and stick to that 1 style, and I am trying to avoid that. So I hope you all dig my experimenting in the past few months. I’m sure I’ll look back at these mixes down the line and find some flaws, but, I’ll leave them be. It’s a learning experience afterall right?

So see the posts below, get to downloading and let me know your thoughts.

Deep House Mix: The Deepness

March 11th, 2008 by rj

So It’s March, and I’m finally putting out the mixes I did in Feb for download. Figured I’d do one more I’ve been wanting to finish for a while. It’s my first deep house mix I’ve released publically, and I’m psyched it’s finally finished.

Tracklist for this will be up soon. But let me know what you think if you take a listen. Since all my mixes lately have sounded different, figured I’d show some more diversity and love for other types of genres.

Thanks everyone for the support.

Progressive Trance / House Mix: Synchronicity

February 22nd, 2008 by rj

On a bit of a roll this week, and with tons of tracks to my avail I wanted to do a few diff styles of mixes. So here’s a trancier one. It will also be released in March, but here’s an early listen.

It’s named Synchronicity for it’s flowingness. Or whatever. I need to stop naming mixes since this is getting harder as time goes on.

I ended it with 2 diff mixes of the same song. Cuz I thought they sounded good back to back. Comments welcome of course.

Progressive House Mix: Imperfect Thoughts

February 19th, 2008 by rj

I am trying to do more mixing and get more familiar with Ableton Live, as well as try and let go of my perfectionism. So this March mix is a combination of some “experimental mixing” and toying with some Ableton Live features I hadn’t played with before. This will be officially my March 2008 mix, but giving it an early release on my blog for the loyal ones.

This is quite melodic, and vocal heavy. I’m quite happy with how it’s turned out. There is a somewhat mini Moonbeam tribute near the end, with 3 tracks involving them in a row, including the ever-popular see the difference (inside mix)

The High Quality download link will be available soon. I have 2 other mixes on the way. One quite trancier, and one more tech house oriented.

blackfeel wite - first night (instrumental mix)
chris reece - the fall (daniel portman main hour dub)
jay lumen - passion and glory
chris micali and ali ajami - only when i lose myself (vocal mix)
envotion f/ misia furtak - familiar places (bart van wissen remix)
matt samuels - start to finish (original mix)
michael cassette - shadows movement
moonbeam - see the difference (inside mix)
lens - beyond the shadows (moonbeam remix)
moonbeam - sky (vocal mix)
vito and dewald - glistening heaven (johan vermeulen remix)

Progressive House Mix: Indulgence

February 4th, 2008 by rj

Wow it’s been a while since I’ve released a mix. Last year was nuts, so after sugary sweet, priorities changed and I didn’t have much time for DJ’ing. Anyhow, it’s now 2008, the progressive house scene has changed a bit. The tech house sound seems to be the new “thing” right now. I dig a lot of it, but of course I tend to favor the more melodic stuff. All the while, Deadmau5 and his buddies kind of tookover the progressive market for the most of last year. While I tend to think most of the tracks sound similar, and the sound itself is getting a bit overplayed. I decided to take my shot at a chunky beated progressive mix. There’s a lot of good beats here, some you probably have heard plenty of times before. But, I like how I laid them out. I hope you do too. Indulge…

James Zabiela - Human (Intro Version)
Hybrid - Finished Symphony (DeadMau5 Remix)
Adam K & Soha - Twilight (Original Mix Revisited)
Fragma - Toca Me (Inpetto 2008 Remix)
Glenn Morrison - No Sudden Moves
Ercola and Heikki L - Deep at Night (Adam K & Soha Remix)
Glenn Morrison - Contact
Thomas Schwartz - Jupiter Calling
Tim Le El & Wollion - Bodymovin (Inpetto Remix)
Dubfire - I Feel Speed (Original Mix)

Progressive House Mix : Sugary Sweet

April 8th, 2007 by rj

So it looks like I am mostly using this blog for releasing mixes lately, heh, I gotta write here more often. Tend to use my vox more for that. Anyways.

The approach I took with this mix is that electro sounds are great and all, but sometimes I like a nice melody and not as an aggressive beat. So most of the tracks here are very melodic, with exception to the first track, I just really like how it opened and led into the second.

I think the mix came out smooth, one of the best I’ve done in a long time, and definitely feel good about it being the first I’m putting publically on the net.

Here is the player so you can listen in a browser, as well as a high quality mp3 download link. Enjoy, and Happy Easter.

Inkfish - Prescreen
Jay Lumen - Circulation
Spin Science and Nighteyes - Flotsam and Jetsam

Christos Fourkis - On The Road (Chris Drifter Remix)
Rick Pier O’Neil - One Love (RPO Original Mix)

Next mix preview?

April 6th, 2007 by rj

I chopped out the first 3 tracks so I can put something on my new myspace music profile. But figured I’d put it here too.

I should have it finished hopefully this weekend, if not then, then soon!

Experimental?

April 5th, 2007 by rj

So Saturday I pretty much stayed in and relaxed, watch basketball and chilled. Didn’t want to do much that night either.

Got some new beats and decided I’d sit (and stand) at my turntables and see if I could put together an Electro mix.

I like some Electro, not a lot, I’m VERY picky. Also I’ve never spun Electro before, and whenever trying a diff genre, different sounds come into play etc, and it can be a bit to pick up. Blah blah, excuses. :)

So I literally put this mix together at 3am, and it sounded OK then. I’ve listened to it again today, and wow, some shoddy mixes due some bad phrase matching, makes me cringe a bit. My beatmatching was pretty on though and I liked my track selection too. So I decided to save it and share.

Please excuse some of the mixes, again it was 3am and my first electro mix.Though I am hyper-critical of myself, so maybe ya wont notice? I’ll probably go back and do a prog house mix next weekend. But this was fun. The tracks are definitely upbeat, so if ya wanna listen. Here ya go.
rj.la - the electro experiment

Tracklist:

BSOD - A Bit Sketchy
Jesse Garcia - Off Da Hook!
Stephan M and X Boys - Do Not Disturb
Darren Mase - Take that Record Off (Mike Heart Remix)
Robot Needs Oil - Volta (Olivier Giacomotto Remix)
Vincent Thomas - Girl
Massi Arena - Magic Carpet (Massi Arena & Liuzzi Remix)
Youri Donatz - Freak Untill You (ErickE Mix)
Global Deejays feat. Technotronic - Get Up (General Electric Version)
Olav Basoski - Da Beat Kicks
Melleefresh and Deadmau5 - Afterhours
Teenage Bad Girl - Cocotte

I know the mix from Do Not Disturb to Take that record off, sounsd like there is a trainwreck. But there is a breakbeat in the intro, and I shoulda finessed it more, but really, it was matched. I’m still not happy how it came out though. Also I really wanted to get the Get Up remix in, and don’t like how that intro’ed or outro’ed. My perfectionism wants me to delete the entire thing ;) but I think it’s not too bad overall. Hell most of you probably won’t notice most of this. :-P
